Sunday Best: I’ve been unmasked

Forgetfulness is no excuse.

Dear reader, I have to tell you something. I haven’t been wearing a mask consistently. I’m sorry. It’s been less an active choice than a persistent forgetfulness. Regardless, it’s not OK. I rode my bike to the bank this week, and as I waited in line I noticed I was one of two unmasked individuals. I was filled with shame. All around me stood people who had made the decision to protect others in their community. I on the other hand had forgotten about that community. My colleague Nick Kristof recently compared going maskless to driving while drunk, and his analogy is exactly what I needed to hear. My masks now live by the front door, a visual reminder to stop forgetting my responsibility to those around me. — Shannon Busta
