Many of us just celebrated America's independence by scarfing hot dogs, watching fireworks light up the sky and waxing poetic about how wonderful the country is. Sure, there are plenty of wonderful things about America, but the makers of this video Op-Ed think "the myth of America as the greatest nation on earth is at best outdated and at worst, wildly inaccurate. There are student loans and mortgages. Child care expenses and retirement savings accounts. These families explain why being middle class today doesn't carry the same meaning — or the same comfort — that it used to.
