Sunday Best: This is America

How we got here, where we are and what we're facing next.

On Wednesday, the United States bid farewell to Donald Trump — a president whose name appeared in almost 2,000 headlines on the front page of The New York Times while he was in office. By midday, Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th president, and Kamala Harris as the first female, Black and Asian-American vice president.

It's worth considering how we got here. As the editorial board member Michelle Cottle and the video journalist Alex Stockton point out, beating an incumbent who was willing to undermine democracy during a pandemic that upended the usual way of voting was no small feat. But winning the election is just the beginning for Biden. The columnist Ezra Klein lays out how a Biden presidency should unfold with a Democratic Congress (in one word: quickly). But as Adam Jentleson notes, Biden's agenda could prove impossible as long as the Senate filibuster exists. To prevent a return of Trumpism and truly make a difference, "Democrats need to reimagine their role," Ezra writes. "They cannot merely defend the political system. They must rebuild it."

Samantha Hunt asks.
