Hey, movie fans!

As we move into the latter part of the summer, Warner Bros. and DC hope to energize things with the action-comedy spectacle "The Suicide Squad." Manohla Dargis writes that the movie could be summed up in four words: "joke, joke, kill, kill." Read an interview with the film's director, James Gunn, and get a closer look at some of its supervillains.

This week, I wrote about "Stillwater," featuring Matt Damon as an Oklahoma man fighting to get his daughter out of a French prison. Coming from Oklahoma myself, I explored whether or not Hollywood has done a good job with depictions of the state.

In movie news, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is trying to clean up its act. The group behind the tarnished Golden Globes has revised its bylaws to diversify its membership and ban the gifts that led it to favor certain films and shows over others. And the Gotham Awards, usually one of the first groups to have a ceremony during the movie awards season, said it would cease defining the best acting categories by gender, and would give an award for outstanding lead performance.

Other movies out this week include the animated musical "Vivo," with songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda (streaming on Netflix), the live-action Adam Driver-Marion Cotillard musical "Annette" (in theaters and, later this month, on Amazon) and the Lucy Walker documentary about California fires, "Bring Your Own Brigade."

Enjoy the movies!
