The virus might be less deadly now, but it's more transmissible. Where do we go from here?

While the risk of deaths, hospitalizations and overwhelmed I.C.U.s has substantially declined since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, uncertainty remains, like how the virus will continue to evolve and whether science can adapt faster. It's clear that many people remain confused, based on the hundreds of reader questions my colleagues and I received over the past few weeks.

For many people, life has returned to normal. For others, it's been a summer of sweaty masks. And there's plenty of negotiating in between. As we've done in the past, we asked three experts of different disciplines to answer readers' questions. They have based their responses on their expertise but also share how they assess information depending on what's important to them. Because of that, these experts are not always in agreement.

For example, Jennifer Nuzzo, an epidemiologist, says that she feels the strongest data on long Covid right now suggests a low risk to kids, even amid uncertainty. "When it comes to my kids, I am not as worried about long Covid, especially now that they are fully vaccinated," she writes. "I am more worried about being too restrictive with their childhoods."

Other experts — or perhaps even you — might feel differently, even if you agree with what the latest data shows.
