Yes, I’m talking about the election.
Elections ask a lot from citizens even at the best of times, and 2020 has hardly been the best of times. Despite this, our editorial board is inviting you to look back on this year’s election in a positive light, to be inspired, even. |
Skeptical? Stay with me here. Yes, America feels pretty divided right now, but this election also demonstrated the average citizen’s dedication to the nation’s most important democratic process. A record number of people voted, and volunteers from across the nation turned out, despite the pandemic, to ensure those votes were counted quickly and correctly. |
“Instead of feeling defeated, Americans came up with creative ways to meet the moment,” the board wrote. That is something worth celebrating. |
On that note, this is my last edition of Sunday Best as I shift my focus to other work on the Opinion desk. It has been a pleasure anchoring this newsletter. You’ll be hearing from other familiar names in the coming weeks, including Jennifer Brown and Alexandra March. Thank you for reading! — Shannon Busta |

“Each time I tell someone why I’m here, the sad irony of it hurts like a gut punch. I’ve traded one perilous identity — being gay in Nigeria — for yet another one: being a Black male in America. The anguish cuts deep into the bones.” |
