Kyle Buchanan Pop Culture Reporter | Hey, movie fans! It's your faithful Carpetbagger. | This week, Disney is releasing Tim Burton's "Dumbo," the first of four 2019 films mined from the studio's animated canon. (Next up in the months to come are "Aladdin," "The Lion King" and the Angelina Jolie sequel "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.") Other new movies include Harmony Korine's "The Beach Bum" with Matthew McConaughey, as well as several critics' picks: the Stephen Bannon doc "The Brink," the Mary Kay Place drama "Diane," the gross-out indie film "Relaxer" and Blitz Bazawule's haunting drama "The Burial of Kojo." | Gotta say, the most exciting film news I heard this week was that Joel Coen (sans Ethan!) is mounting a movie version of "Macbeth" with Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand for A24. I've seen a lot of versions of Shakespeare's Scottish play, but how can you argue with that package? | What I'm most psyched about, though, is that we're finally entering a prolific period for McDormand. Though she's a two-time best-actress Oscar-winner, there have been far too many swaths of time where we didn't see the 61-year-old McDormand onscreen for several years. Now, after the career jolt offered by "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri," she's already banked new projects from Chloe Zhao and Wes Anderson, and she's about to go toe-to-toe with Denzel Washington. | I'm excited to see McDormand on a regular basis, and I can't wait to see what she'll uncork opposite a co-star like Washington, the best casting match yet for her won't-flinch personality. They're such a delicious duo! | | |
