Hey, movie fans! It's your faithful Carpetbagger.
There are only two movies getting an ultra-wide release this week — the new X-Men film "Dark Phoenix" and "The Secret Life of Pets 2" — but it's anything but a sleepy debut frame for a ton of other movies debuting in a handful of theaters.
Among those are the Mindy Kaling-Emma Thompson comedy "Late Night," which is attempting to drum up buzz in advance of a wider release next weekend, as well as the remarkably gorgeous "Last Black Man in San Francisco," which is already one of the best films of the year. Two foreign-language entries this week, "Funan" and "Leto," are Critics' Picks as well.
And look at all the new documentaries jostling for your attention! You've got "Framing John DeLorean" and "The Raft," "Pavarotti" and "Nureyev," and if the dancing in that last one isn't quite exotic enough for you, there's also "This One's for the Ladies," about a male strip club. When I think about summer-movie bloodbaths, I usually picture $200 million films duking it out for the number-one spot, but this weekend is a good reminder that the competition is just as vicious when it comes to specialty counterprogramming this summer.
