Hey, movie fans! It's your faithful Carpetbagger, back from the Toronto Film Festival. |
Are you ready for fall movies? From what I saw in Toronto, we're going to have a lot to talk about, from Jennifer Lopez dancing to Fiona Apple in "Hustlers" to Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson trading tour-de-force scenes in "Marriage Story." I expect debates about the unusual takes on familiar material we get in "Joker" and "Jojo Rabbit," and the comeback performances from the likes of Renée Zellweger in "Judy," Adam Sandler in "Uncut Gems," and Wesley Snipes in "Dolemite Is My Name." And slowly but surely, this year's Oscar race is starting to fall into place … |
Two of this year's big Toronto premieres will be in theaters near you this week: "Hustlers," which is earning Oscar buzz for Lopez, and "The Goldfinch," adapted from the novel by Donna Tartt and starring Ansel Elgort. In more limited release are the Critics' Pick drama "Ms. Purple," "The Sound of Silence" with Peter Sarsgaard and Rashida Jones, and the child-soldier drama "Monos." This week's documentaries include "América," about a Mexican family; "Cracked Up," about the comedian Darrell Hammond; and "Moonlight Sonata: Deafness In Three Movements," about deaf family members connected by Beethoven. |
Oh, and have you had the chance to check out our fall preview stories yet? There's a whole lot of them, including profiles of the "Joker" actor Joaquin Phoenix, the "Harriet" star Cynthia Erivo, and the "Terminator" returnee Linda Hamilton, as well as deep dives into "Dolemite Is My Name,""Maleficent: Mistress of Evil" and "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker." If you need a way to sort out all your anticipation, we've also got a calendar of what's coming soon. |
