Hey, movie fans! |
One industry’s holiday period is another industry’s busy period, and so it goes with Hollywood, where the final weeks of December bring an onslaught of blockbusters and would-be Oscar contenders. Next week, I’ll finally see the last two big films of the year: “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” and “Cats.” (“Cats”!) Will I emerge from my double feature humming “Memory” or John Williams’ last “Star Wars” score? Perhaps they’ll merge to become an unholy mashup in my head, and I’ll conduct an imaginary orchestra as though Andrew Lloyd Webber were swinging a lightsaber. |
This week’s releases are further proof that the holiday floodgates have opened. The blockbuster sequel “Jumanji: The Next Level” arrives alongside some significant award contenders — Clint Eastwood’s “Richard Jewell,” the Adam Sandler film “Uncut Gems” and the fact-based “Bombshell,” starring Charlize Theron — as well as the horror movie “Black Christmas” and, streaming on Netflix, Michael Bay’s shoot-em-up “6 Underground.” In more limited release, you can find the acclaimed 3-D dance documentary “Cunningham” and Terence Malick’s pastoral “A Hidden Life.” |
