Plus, John Turturro resurrects the Jesus.
One of the most surprising film announcements this week is that there’s still a fifth “Indiana Jones” movie on the way with the 77-year-old Harrison Ford set to star, but for the first time, Steven Spielberg won’t be directing it. He’s instead bequeathed helming duties to James Mangold, the director of “Ford v. Ferrari” and “Logan.” |
Mangold is evidently talented and certainly skilled enough to direct a blockbuster of this scale, though I do worry about an X factor that could go missing: Spielberg takes such delight in the choreography and inventive blocking of his “Indiana Jones” films, where the action scenes hew closer to Busby Berkeley than Michael Bay, and there aren’t many directors these days to whom that giddy glee comes naturally. |
Maybe Mangold has had that all along and just never uncorked it, or maybe we’ll just have to get used to an “Indiana Jones” series that continues despite losing key inspirations. (Is the 88-year-old composer John Williams next to tag out, or will he return for the fifth time?) These days, no valuable franchise is allowed to lay dormant too long. |
Forward it to your friends, and let them know they can sign up here. |
