Movies Update: “Mulan,” “An American Pickle” and More

Plus, get to know the work of Abbas Kiarostami

By Stephanie Goodman

Hi, film fans!

You’d think that in August with many theaters closed because of the pandemic, there wouldn’t be movie news, but no!

Disney said this week that it would be releasing the much-anticipated live-action version of “Mulan” on Sept. 4 to Disney+ subscribers for a premium — meaning you’ll have to pay $29.99 to watch. The announcement set off intense reactions. Theater owners aren’t thrilled and probably clicked “like” more than once on the viral video of the French cinema owner who took a bat to repeatedly bash a “Mulan” poster. (Though it should be noted the film will play theaters in regions where they are open.) The price has also drawn a lot of scrutiny, with arguments pro (families would probably end up paying a lot more if they went to the theater) and con (it’s costly in a pandemic). The movie had its world premiere in Los Angeles right before the lockdown, and the initial reactions were promising. Will you pay for it?

While we await “Mulan,” new movie and streaming choices abound. “An American Pickle,” the first HBO Max original, stars Seth Rogen in dual roles, and our critic A.O. Scott says the comedy finds “agreeable, occasionally touching vein of humor” as it explores what it means to be Jewish. And Manohla Dargis describes “La Llorona” as “a thoughtful, low-key Guatemalan movie that deploys its genre shocks inside a sober art-house package.”

Have fun at home at the movies!
