Hi, film fans!

As studios continue to rearrange their release schedules because of the pandemic, I asked Kyle Buchanan, our awards season expert, the question I’ve been asking him every week for the last few months: Will the Oscars really happen? His answer has been a consistent yes, and this week he explained why, even if it’s difficult to stage the Academy Awards, there will be plenty of contenders and why the major categories could be more diverse than ever. Read more here.

His list of potential nominees included “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” which is premiering on Netflix today. A.O. Scott is blunt in his assessment of this Aaron Sorkin project: “I don’t think, on balance, that this is a very good movie. It’s talky and clumsy, alternating between self-importance and clowning. But it’s also not a movie that can be easily shaken off.”

If you’re looking for a movie you don’t want to shake off, Manohla Dargis says, “The first thing you should do when you’re ready to watch ‘David Byrne’s American Utopia’ — and you should watch this exuberant concert movie from Spike Lee — is clear some room in front of your TV. Check your sound, crank the volume, press play.”

I’ll leave you to it. Have a movie-filled weekend!
