Sunday Best: New ways to think about motherhood

Listen to moms on the subject they know best.

As someone who has lost a mom and has yet to become a mom, Mother's Day always seems to pass me by. Not because I avoid it; it's just that beyond the fond memories of demanding my mom stay supine until I deliver her breakfast in bed, the day says little about the years she was around — to care for me, play with me and teach me the values that made me who I am today.

That is why I've enjoyed the various essays and reflections from readers on motherhood that Times Opinion has published this week. All in their own way, they speak to something I consider paramount: If we're going to allocate a day to celebrating mothers, why not focus on what matters? Understanding their fears, appreciating their labor and taking in the wealth of information they can offer might take a little longer than choosing a gift. But it may prove more rewarding.
