State leadership is more critical than ever. The Times editorial board endorses Kathy Hochul.

It's Election Day in New York for primary races for governor and several other state offices. The decision that voters will face is not simply which name to mark on their ballots. When voters make their choices they are also expressing their views about what they want the future of their state and their country to look like. Last week, the Supreme Court released two decisions — overturning Roe v. Wade and striking down a law that put strict limits on handguns — that underscored the importance of state leadership when the national political landscape is so uncertain. |
In New York today, primary voters will decide how they want their state and its leaders to handle abortion rights, public safety, gun violence, housing affordability and public transit, among other issues. My colleagues and I on the Times editorial board spoke at length to the three leading candidates in the Democratic primary for governor about their positions on all of these issues before making our endorsement in this race. |
Kathy Hochul, the governor of New York, is our choice. As we wrote in our editorial: |
"With the federal government paralyzed on many of these issues, states are poised to become an even more powerful force in American life. New York is among the few that have been dedicated to defending these essential norms that are under attack elsewhere in the country. It's a moment, in other words, when leadership matters. Gov. Kathy Hochul is already leading on these questions, and she deserves an additional four years as chief executive of New York." |
The two other candidates we spoke to are also dedicated public servants, and we are glad that Hochul has strong competition in this race. Tom Suozzi is a representative from Long Island, and Jumaane Williams is New York City's public advocate. |
We have published transcripts of our interviews with all three candidates. If you are voting in the primary today, we encourage you to read them, as well as our endorsement, as you consider your choice and how you will use it to shape the future of New York. |
Here's what we're focusing on today: |
