Truth to tell, awards season started quietly with the fall film festivals and ratcheted up a gear last weekend with the Governors Awards, as my colleague Kyle Buchanan, a.k.a. The Projectionist, reported. It's ostensibly a ceremony to honor lifetime achievements. This year, Michael J. Fox, the songwriter Diane Warren, and the directors Euzhan Palcy and Peter Weir took home statuettes. But in truth this is where Oscar hopefuls get face time with academy members. As The Projectionist noted, "a brief walk through the room produced run-ins with 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' actors Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis, 'Elvis' star Austin Butler, and Brendan Fraser, mounting an industry comeback with his transformative role in 'The Whale.'" |
