Is Ron DeSantis the takeaway from 2022?
| By John Guida Senior Staff Editor, Opinion |
After months of polls, prognostications and promises of red or blue waves (or mirages!), Election Day has come and gone. Now we begin to make sense of, discuss and chew over the results. |
For Times Opinion, the process began as results were pouring in, with a live chat that featured columnists, contributors and editors. |
The banter included a wide range of topics: elections and power, the initial sense of dread among some Democrats, potential shifts in the electorate, particularly among Latino voters, a new period of grinding political trench warfare, issues like crime and inflation, and exploration of what the midterms mean for President Biden's political future and a potential Donald Trump restoration in 2024. |
The striking disparity between DeSantis's resounding win and what appear to be underwhelming election results for many other Republicans has Douthat thinking that perhaps DeSantis's political future is now center stage: "In a normal political world, a normal political party, you would say that DeSantis effectively became the 2024 Republican front-runner last night. Nothing about the G.O.P. has been normal since Trump descended that escalator in 2015, so I won't be claiming anything so definite." |
In the coming days and weeks, Times Opinion will be diving into the results as they come into clearer focus — and making more definite claims about American politics. Stay tuned. |
