Opinion Today: Our journalism at its best

I want to take a moment to celebrate some colleagues.

I'm thrilled to congratulate my colleagues on some richly deserved recognition: Our series on political extremism, The Danger Within, is a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in editorial writing. This series was New York Times Opinion at its best — identifying a significant and complex problem with no easy solutions in a free society; reporting deeply on the critical angles and nuances, with a special focus on real people being affected; writing with clarity, authority and vivid prose; and working as a team, on the editorial board and across the department, to shape and elevate the series into its finest possible form.

That effort begins with Alex Kingsbury, the lead writer, who took the ongoing rise in political unrest in the United States as a prompt last June and applied his reporting expertise — on national security, domestic extremism, gun culture and more — and his writing gifts to lay out a compelling argument about the perilousness of the present moment. Through eight editorials, he made clear the threat coming from right-wing extremists and the consequences of failing to act.

As with any undertaking of this magnitude, Alex had invaluable support from a team of incredible colleagues. Jyoti Thottam edited the series, providing guidance in shaping the structure, arguments and research. Julie Ho was a tireless partner to Alex and Jyoti and fact-checked every piece, scrutinizing every detail with diligence and care. The photo editing was not easy work. Sara Barrett went above and far beyond, immersing herself in coded iconography and symbolism in the militia movements. Cassady Rosenblum's granular reporting on the Proud Boys in Manhattan contributed to the fourth piece in the series. Patrick Healy provided editing support and leadership throughout.

This is the third time the Times editorial board has been a finalist in this category in the past five years, including Brent Staples's 2019 win.

We must congratulate the extraordinary work of our Times newsroom colleagues that was honored yesterday as well.

It's astonishing to me, to this day, that I come to work tasked with harnessing our collective curiosity to contemplate a vision for the future and argue in favor of all the ways we can get there. The opportunity to do so at The New York Times is a gift, and this editorial series is a product of that vision. Congratulations to all those involved, and thank you to our publisher A.G. Sulzberger and his family for their stewardship of The Times's mission and values.

The privilege of my professional life is to be given the chance to spend my days working alongside some of the most talented journalists on the planet. In celebrating this accomplishment, I'm full of pride and gratitude.
