The holidays are magical. When we're young, it's because of Santa. Now it's because of that feeling. You know, the one that makes you ignore a snide dinnertime remark by a family member and focus on all of the good things that person has ever done for you; it's that feeling you get sitting by the fire, sinking into a level of relaxation that's nearly unattainable at any other time of the year; it's the heart-stretching feeling of giving to others that have less than you (and if you are one for holiday donations, here are seven standards to keep in mind). One of the greatest gifts I got this year was the chance to be close to the journalism that comes out of The Times's Opinion department, so I wanted to share a few of the most memorable articles from the year below (and a fun bonus from this week: Notes From Your Fiction Professor on 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer'). I hope you enjoy these reads and your holiday. I'll be back in your inbox on Jan. 6. — Alexandra March
