Kyle Buchanan Pop Culture Reporter | Hey, movie fans! It's your faithful Carpetbagger. | After a few weeks mostly dominated by prestige films, we're in the Christmas corridor, where all the big studio aspirants hope to lure families to the theater over the holiday. This year, that includes "Aquaman," which hopes to deliver DC Comics a franchise-starter on par with "Wonder Woman," and "Bumblebee," which hopes to rescue the diminished "Transformers" franchise with something a bit more down to earth. | Jennifer Lopez hasn't had a big screen success in a few years, but perhaps "Second Act" will provide exactly that, while Robert Zemeckis brings his uncanny CGI predilections to the Steve Carell vehicle "Welcome to Marwen." And then, in more limited release, comes another acclaimed, black-and-white foreign film hot on the heels of "Roma": This one is the Polish drama "Cold War," with a phenomenal lead performance by the actress Joanna Kulig. | All of these films have high ambitions, and they also have a clearer path to success than films in previous winters, which tended to be dominated by a year-end "Star Wars" release. With those space sequels out of the mix, I'll be curious to see not only which films open well, but which can leg out a long afterlife like last year's "The Greatest Showman." Might that end up being "Mary Poppins Returns," which has a similar mix of family appeal and high-spirited music? Better songs might have helped, but Emily Blunt's performance as the magic nanny is memorably arch, at least. | | |
