Half a century ago this week, we put two men on the moon — but not everyone wanted them there. Others were hoping for a "financial and political commitment to tackle the host of problems that then convulsed our home planet — not only the war in Southeast Asia, but also racial discrimination, pollution and gender inequality." Those concerns were heard, and they eventually influenced NASA's work. But today, spaceflight is largely privatized, with billionaires at the helms of rocket ships, dreaming up ways to carry the wealthiest among us through the stars.
