Memorial Day is traditionally a big moviegoing weekend and this one is especially notable, as it will be one of the first times since the pandemic that a highly anticipated movie — "A Quiet Place Part II" — will be in theaters only. (Others, like "Godzilla vs. Kong," were available to stream and see in multiplexes on the same day.) |
The "Quiet Place" sequel was initially due a year ago and our reporter, Dave Itzkoff, was ready to go with a story then, a piece that was postponed when the movie was delayed. He recently checked back in with John Krasinski, the movie's director and co-star, and found the filmmaker wasn't sure whether audiences would go back to theaters. "I have no idea what's going to happen with the box office," he said. "What's most important to me is that if you want to see this movie, I'm going to show it to you." |
A few weeks ago, I wrote in this newsletter that this is a question we in the movies department have been wrestling with as well. Most of us are going to screenings, which are select showings for journalists; only a few of us have ventured to multiplexes or arthouses, a mixed experience, at least in New York City, that the writer Joshua Rothkopf chronicled in this essay. When I asked you readers to let us know whether you were planning to go back, a handful were excited to return, but the vast majority said theaters were out of the question post-pandemic or at least until more people were vaccinated. |
Still, studios are betting that those excited to return will soon outnumber the rest, and this season will be packed with releases. In our preview of the summer's highlights, Emma Stone spoke to Kyle Buchanan about why she was drawn to the villainous origin story "Cruella"; Colman Domingo talked with Cara Buckley about why he too was happy to visit the dark side in "Zola" and "Candyman"; and the director Justin Lin explained to Mekado Murphy how he pulled off one of the more eye-popping stunts in "F9," the next entry in the "Fast and Furious" franchise. |
