Stephanie Goodman Film Editor | Hi, film fans! | Memorial Day weekend means we're headed into the heart of the summer moviegoing season, and there are a few titles that have us all talking in the office, for better and worse. | First, there's "Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood," the Quentin Tarantino movie that debuted at the Cannes Film Festival this week. Manohla Dargis's reports from Cannes (her initial reaction and interview with Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt) have us eager to check out what has been called a love letter to the industry. | It's not opening stateside until July 26 and Tarantino has warned audiences — needlessly in the view of critics — against spoilers. That's fine by me. I want to see it for myself. (By the way, you may have noticed that the poster and the release information from the studio, Sony, have the title's ellipses in different places. Because this is The New York Times, I am trying to get to the bottom of this.) | Then there's "Aladdin," which has split us largely into two camps: those who think it's meh and those who think it's worse than that. A.O. Scott, in his review, calls it "the new live-action re-whatever," and that's a good description. Some of my colleagues, especially those who cherished the original, had much more, um, visceral reactions. | While we wait for winners to be announced this weekend at Cannes, see you at the movies! | | |
